Navarrenx Fortified Bastide
Built a century before Vauban's famous fortifications, Navarrenx was France's first bastioned town. Its impressive 10-metre ramparts - now a listed Historic Monument - showcase remarkable military architecture including bastions, demilunes, fortified gates and watchtowers.
Designated as one of France's "most beautiful villages", Navarrenx welcomes approximately 12,000 pilgrims each year along the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route.

Sauveterre of Bearn
Sauveterre is a "Sauveté Castrale" - a fortified sanctuary. From its 11th-century origins, the town has been a place of refuge, welcoming and protecting its population under the direct safeguard of the viscount.
From its rich military past emerged numerous monuments - impressive not only for their defensive architecture but also as treasures of fascinating stories and legends.
